Vitrectomy for Vitreomacular Traction
April 2016

REVIEW:Dr. Steven Cohen has provided me with outstanding care for my retinal condition (Vitreomacular Traction). He was able to advise me about the latest research and treatment for my condition, and was able to discuss why the advice I had received previously probably would not work for me. His curriculum vita is exceptional and his knowledge and experience was reflected in the exceptional treatment I received. As a surgeon, he was able to correct my problem with a pars plana vitrectomy, and was very considerate throughout the process. He even called me at home on the day after my surgery to find out how I was doing!! This attention to me as a patient is typical of his practice. His support staff is always prompt, caring and efficient. As I result of Dr. Cohen's treatment, I can now see much better than I have seen in years. My distance eyesight is now 20/16!!
Staff Review: Always welcomed with a smile and hello. Never have to wait more than a moment to be seen. The entire staff, from arrival to check out is professional and friendly.
Suggestions:the staff is always prompt, caring and efficient" PATIENT: 72 year old volunteer

Macular Degeneration
April 2016

REVIEW:" Dr. Cohen is a skilled surgeon who has been able to repair problems another "doctor" had created. Both of my parents are now under Dr. Cohen's care, and I am incredibly thankful for his skills. In both cases, he saved their eyesight. I, and my parents, highly recommend Dr. Cohen and Retinal Vitreous Associates. "

Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

Wet AMD
January 2016

REVIEW:" I am very pleased with the treatment I am receiving from Dr. Cohen. I get shots for macular degeneration. He knows what he is doing. If there is pain after a shot it is minimal although most of the time I can go about my business the same day without any problems or pain. I would highly recommend him to anyone who asks.
Staff Review: The office staff is very professional. Scheduling appointments were easy and I was seen within a few minutes after arriving. The staff also calls a day or two before the appointment as a reminder.
PATIENT: 74 year old retired business owner with wet age-related macular degeneration treated since 2013 - moved to Florida in 2015.

Ocular Histoplasmosis
January 2016

REVIEW:" I have been in the ongoing care of Dr. Cohen for over seven years. He has an incredibly good patient/doctor rapport. He takes the time to explain the procedure he is using and more importantly he consistently gets great results. He is on the cutting edge of medicine and presents a tremendous curriculum vitae. His bedside manner is as good as it gets.
Staff Review: In many cases a physician's front office and staff develop what I call, "their own little empire." They are on a frequent basis non-communicative and have no interest in whatever might be your ailment. Not this staff. From the first person you meet there you are treated with dignity and a good amount of friendliness and compassion. If they can help you they will, if they can't they will point you in the right direction. I rate them 5 out of 5 stars. Whoever is in charge of Human Resources gets 5 stars as well.
PATIENT: 75 year old retired airline pilot with ocular histoplasmosis requiring periodic injection therapy.

REVIEW: "I got to say, I have been through a lot in life. A divorce & 3 times being robbed at gunpoint & yet this had me more worried than any of that. I mean this is your vision; the one sense you would want to lose last. That is how I went into this. Then I met Dr. Cohen. He was very calm & reassuring both before & after the surgery. That & he answered every last question I had written down at every step of the way; from the 1st consult to the many follow-ups. Now I am only 3 weeks into my recovery but as of now I am very very pleased with all of it. So relieved!
Staff Review: The staff was very friendly & helpful. They made everything in between seeing the surgeon run smoothly. PATIENT: "43 year old budget analyst."

retinal detachment
January 2015

REVIEW: "All I can say is do your homework when it comes to your health. After poor results from surgery for macular pucker resulting in a detached retina from another surgeon, I was left with no sight in my left eye and, hard to believe, another detached retina! The surgeon wanted to operate again. I left this surgeon and unfortinately this is when I began to do my homework. I researched the outstanding hospitals in the US for eye surgery. Unfortunately the wait for an appointment was five weeks and I could not wait. A detached retina needs prompt attention. I asked the hospital in FL if there were any surgeons that had worked there and are local to Tampa Bay. They called back and give me the name of Dr. Cohen in Clearwater. He had worked at the Bascom Palmer institute at the University of Miami, a world class eye institute. I called Dr. Cohens office in Clearwater and basically said I am coming in. They were very accomodating and I was seeing Dr. Cohen the next day. Unfortunately for me, the previous surgeries had damaged my macular but Dr. Cohen carefully explained what had happened and how much sight I may expect after operating. Dr. Cohen reattached the retina and I now have some sight in that eye. I have appeciated all the skill of Dr. Cohen and his ability to explain in english what was going on and the probable outcome. I just wished I had Dr. Cohen operate on my initial Macular Pucker first. Perhaps the outcome would have been much fifferent."
Staff- Unlike my previous surgeon, Dr. Cohen's office in Clearwater is very efficient with almost no waiting time. First you work with a Technician that evaluate your status. They are great and are really concerned with your condition. After this evaluation, you are quickly placed in a examination room and Dr. Cohen is quickly devoting his time to only you. The office staff are probally the best I have experienced in Florida. PATIENT: "69 year old man who had a complex retinal detachment surgery done by Dr. Cohen who had his macula partially removed during a macular pucker surgery done elseware."

Macular Degeneration
March 2015

REVIEW:" I have started my fourth year of treatment for AMD and I am ever so grateful for finding Dr. Cohen.. He saw me right away and began treatment that same day. He spent much time explaining my problem. Not being able to see is very frightening, but he was extremely reassuring . I only ran into one concern in all this time, and I felt very comfortable calling the office with a question. Turned out it was nothing, but they saw me that day just to reassure me that all was well. He is very knowledgeable and professional, as is, his entire staff. He has a very well-run office. I have never been kept waiting for any appointment. I would highly recommend Dr. Cohen.
PATIENT: 80 year old retired nurse with wet macular degeneration.

Macular Degeneration
Carotid Disease

July 2015

REVIEW:" My regular ophthalmologist, David E. Hall, MD referred me to Dr. Steven Cohen for treatment of suspected macular degeneration. Many tests were performed to confirm I indeed, had macular degeneration. One test was a dye uptake so Dr. Cohen could visualize my retina and macula. Dr. Cohen noticed the uptake took twice as long as normal. He recommended that I contact my primary care Dr. Immediately. Two weeks later I had a left carotid endarterectomy. The carotid artery was 99.5% blocked. I know Dr. Cohen saved my life! Dr. Cohen injected my left eye with wet macular degeneration on my initial visit, which I barely felt. He explained his treatment plan for me to get the best possible outcome. I have had two subsequent visits with Dr. Cohen and I am happy to report much improvement in my macular degeneration and vision. In addition to his extensive expertise, Dr. Cohen exhibits what fewer and fewer doctors have these days, a caring and compassionate demeanor. I am lucky to have Dr. Cohen as a doctor and wholeheartedly recommend him to all my friends who have macular degeneration.
PATIENT: 91 year old retired medical technologist with wet macular degeneration and carotid disease.

Macular Hole
March 2015

REVIEW:"I was very impressed with your office and all the testing you did for my friends eyes that led to her diagnosis. She has a macular hole which is going to require surgery. The doctor showed us all the films and results of all the tests taken. After telling us what the test results were and answering any questions we had Mrs. Tatro decided to have the surgery. Dr. Cohen explained the procedure for the surgery and she was fine with that also. I am best friends with Mrs. Tatro and I can speak for her. We both felt comfortable with Dr. Cohen and his ability to perform the surgery without complications."
" Your staff were all friendly and informative. We were seen right away and appointments made with ease and surgery information was precise and understandable. The technicians that did all the testing were also friendly and informative while they were doing the testing. Mrs. Tatro likes Dr. Cohen and feels very at ease that the surgery will go well she has confidence in his ability to do this procedure."
PATIENT: 85 year old woman with a macular hole in the left eye.

Dislocated IOL
March 2015

REVIEW:" My Opthamologist had performed Cataract surgery 2 months prior and I was experiencing a "glowing" or "halo" sensation that caused all light to go up and to the right. That first Doctor I saw told me he had no idea what my problem was and said "there is nothing more I can do for you and I suggest you see a retina specialist." Several friends of mine recommended Dr. Cohen. I made an appointment, was greeted by Beatrice and after a 5 minute chat, she knew what the problem was, re-assured me that it could be taken care of and I was in good hands with Dr. Cohen. Then I met Dr. Cohen and immediately felt at ease. He showed me a picture of my dislocated lens and discussed some options that would rectify my problem. Why the first doctor failed to detect what was obvious only that doctor can answer that. Dr. Cohen had to perform surgery to re-position the lens and it went exactly as Dr. Cohen advised it would. It has been 6 months post surgery and everything is fine. I felt a great deal of relief after my initial visit; the staff was cordial and professional and when I met Dr. Cohen I knew I was in the right hands. His staff is attentive, know what they are doing and that, by itself, was a vast improvement from what I had been dealing with . Every appointment I have had was pleasant, never having to wait for my appointment and everything runs like clockwork. Dr. Cohen is obviously a skilled doctor but more than that he is compassionate and easy to talk with. I would highly recommed Dr.Cohen to anyone needing treatment in his field. In fact, I already have and they have thanked me for referring "the good doctor."

Wet Macular Degeneration
July 2012

REVIEW: "When I was initially diagnosed with AMD I was, of course, very nervous,(and if the truth be known, I was in fact really scared) when Dr. Cohen explained to me that I needed ocular injections to prevent blindness. The first time was truly a fear of the unknown but after "it was all over" I left the offcie thinking: "Well, that was not so bad at all, considering what just happened to me !" I was in and out and driving back to work within a half hour and that included the "waiting time" for the anaesthetic to numb my eye. The actual proceedure takes merely seconds. I have been having treatment for three years and visit the Clearwater office every six weeks or so. When I first started the treatments, the nurse used a Q-tip to apply the initial anaethetic in my eye. This was a little uncomfortable, I have to say, but science being as prgressive as it is and as new products became available, nowadays, a gel is applied and this is not unpleasant at all. The next procedure is the local anaesthetic via an injection. This takes a few seconds and ia slight burning sensation is experienced, but certainly nothing to be afraid of and it doesn;t hurt (due to the gel applied beforehand). Approximately 5 - 10 minutes later, Dr. Cohen administers the Avastin, again via an injection. A clamp (lid speculum) is first applied (which one cannot feel) and this is to prevent the patient blinking, whilst the Avastin is injected. This procedure again takes a few seconds and is painless. Dr. Cohen saved my sight (I have AMD in both eyes) and these six weekly injections are a small price to pay when compared with darkness. He is extremely knowledgeable, gentle and sympathetic. He answers any questions I have in layman's terms (terms that even I can understand). He is definitely on the cutting edge of technology, has invested in the latest equipment available and has a support staff which is second to none. I can, without reservation, recommend Dr. Cohen and his team of dedicated professionals. Oh, by the way, apart from slightly red eyes occassionaly (which makes me a big hit a Halloween parties), there are no after effects, I ALWAYS drive to my office and work after treatments. The following day, I even forget I had the treatment the day before.
Staff- highly professional. I never wait more than five minutes, but there is useful information on the waiting room TV which is interesting and factual. Appointments are easily and quickly scheduled and a reminder by telephone the day prior to my appointment is always forthcoming. Good for me as I have a very busy schedule !" PATIENT: 66 year old male engineer with wet AMD treated with intravitreal Avastin both eyes for 4 years.

Myopic Degeneration
December 2014

REVIEW:"Dr. Cohen is an extremely gifted Doctor and I am so blessed to have him as my Doctor. I had extremely high myopia and experienced a bleed and a crack which left me with macular degeration. Dr. Cohen has been treating me for years. He is amazing. I also went to one of the finest retina specialist in the country, Dr. Carmen Puliafetto, who was at the Bascom Palmer Eyes Institute at the time. Dr. Puliafetto raved about Dr. Cohen's talent now and in the days when they were at Harvard together. In my opinion, if you are not being treated by Dr. Cohen for any retina issues you may have, you have the wrong Doctor. He is the absolute. BEST."
"The office quite efficient and very nice. You rarely have to wait long. "
PATIENT: 62 year old investment advisor who had a macular bleed from myopic degeneration.

Retinal Detachment
July 2012

REVIEW:"I must say, Dr. Cohen was my surgeon and without his kindness and understanding, it would have been really bad for me. The two other doctors that I had any contact either by phone or in his absence were absolutely the kindness, most caring and understanding medical people I have yet to deal with. They understood you were scared of going blind, scared you had no idea you knew what was happening to you. I had never even thought about someone putting stitches in my eye. Without their empathy and care, I'm not sure my healing process would have been what it was. I almost failed to mention their gifted hands and minds.....Wonderful group"

My surgery took place in the early evening of July 3rd. Dr. Cohen met me at his office the following morning (Fourth of July) for a post op examination of my eye. Macular Pucker
October 2012

REVIEW:"I met with Dr. Cohen after being diagonised with a macular wrinkle on my left eye by my opthomologist. Dr. Cohen explained the procedure he would follow and even showed me the equipment (tool) he would be using in my eye. The surgery took place as an outpatient in Large Medical Center. I was apprehensive but this was completely unnecessary as everything was relaxed and painless. Because I had had Lasik Eye Surgery, it was somewhat more complicated, but Dr. Cohen was so pleased with the procedure he was sorry he did not have his camera set up to tape this beforehand. The worse part was all of the eye drops necessary afterward but they were painless. I have been seeing Dr. Cohen for 5 years now and find him really pleasant and easy to talk to. On my last visit in 2012, he discovered 2 diabetic spots on my right eye and he will continue to follow them as they are harmless right now. Thank you so much, Dr. Cohen, for your support and kindness."

Wet Macular Degeneration
January 2013

REVIEW:"Dr. Cohen first saw me in 2010 on recommendation of Dr. G. W. Lazenby for wet macular degeneration. The vision in my left eye was almost totally blocked. Dr. Cohen has relieved the problem to the extent that my vision in that eye has recovered to about 20-160 and its peripheral vision is good; I have made it known that I would not have thought it possible to recover that well. I developed a potential problem in my right eye which continuing treatment by Dr. Cohen has kept from deteriorating further. Not only does Dr. Cohen know his stuff around an eyeball, he has fantastic patient skills. It has been a pleasure to be treated by him." Wet Macular Degeneration
April 2014

REVIEW:"When horizontal and vertical lines began to appear wavy, my eye doctor referred me to Dr.Cohen. I went in with seriously obstructed vision in my left eye. It was as if a big black disc had been placed in front of that eye. Although there was some peripheral vision, I couldn't focus on it. After the most complete eye exam I've every had, Dr. Cohen recommended "a shot in the eye" This frightened the daylights out of me, but he assured me that it probably wouldn't be too painful. He warned me that it was quite expensive, but that he felt it was the smart way to go. When I actually had the first shot, it was a "piece of cake", a little uncomfortable for a day or so. After several shots about four weeks apart, I suddenly realized that my left eye vision was back to normal. To me this was close to miraculous and I told Dr. Cohen. I would never hesitate to refer anyone with a similar problem to him."

Amaurosis Fugax
January 2013

"I have been a patient of Dr. Cohen's for quite a while now. Not only have I always found him to be a fantastic physician and also a great person. He has a terrific bed side manner. Dr Cohen operated on my right retina a few years back and I've not had a problem with that eye since. Recently, while examining my left eye, he told me the problems I was having were not eye-related but might be due to blockage in the carotid artery or the brain. He immediately contacted my vascular surgeon who discovered almost complete blockage of the carotid. I had surgery about three weeks ago and everything is now fine. I cannot thank Dr. Cohen enough for getting me help so quickly. The outcome might have been quite different if he hadn't taken the time to contact the vascular surgeon. He takes marvelous care of his patients. I would recommend him to anyone with an eye problem"
